The temptation for all of us in 2012 is to take the direct route to the start of the Big O on 27th July, switch on the patriotism button, support our athletes and enjoy sharing some English and Welsh wines in bars, restaurants and at home. However I really think we need to increase our domestic support for our excellent vino in the months leading up to the opening ceremony. I attended a New Year’s Eve party this year full of foodies and wine lovers, many of whom were asking me “What’s the story with English and Welsh wines?” I told them to tune in to ITV’s “Caroline Quentin’s Cornwall” on Monday 2nd Jan in which the Camel Valley team is featured, and thereby started my propaganda for English and Welsh wines in 2012!

We have around 400 English and Welsh vineyards and 2012 is going to be the biggest year ever, so get on board! Here are some ideas for starters:

– Twitter conversation seems low amongst domestic producers and yet, as Kathryn O’Mara from retailer Artisan & Vine will testify, Twitter can do a great job for your business if used effectively. There are plenty of good tweeters who will mention and retweet including @ukvine @englishwine ,@DrinkBritain, @VisitEngland @VisitWales. Wine loving twitterati everywhere, please join the conversation!
– In 2012 it would be great to see some major and independent retailers listing a selection of local producers in preparation for English Wine Week, the Diamond Jubilee and The Olympics. Let’s all encourage them by asking for English wines in our local shops.
– It would also be fantastic if on-line specialists like and good independents like The Sampler, created an English Case of wine, showcasing all the wonderful styles of English and Welsh wines.

English Wine Week is organised by Julia Trustram-Eve at English Wine Producers . It starts on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend on Saturday 2nd June and runs to 10th June. Julia does a great job of encouraging participation and publicising this week so, all you producers and participating outlets out there, it’s time to get the information over to Julia and let’s see the largest number of participants ever this year. It will be a great treat for wine lovers around the UK. And the English and Welsh industries’ regional associations, please publicise events on a local basis so that as many people as possible can enjoy a wonderful week of English and Welsh wines.
