An international forum for exploring innovation and sharing best practice in the production and sale of Champagnes and sparkling wines is to be staged at Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey in early December.

The International Sparkling Wine Symposium (ISWS) will involve up to 180 oenologists, producers, marketers, buyers and journalists from across the world. Tickets are available now via the ISWS  website  at a cost of £345.00 per head, to include lunch and refreshments each day, the Grand Tasting and Dinner on Tuesday  December 3. Discounted early bird tickets, costing £295.00 per head, are available until June 30.

Speakers at the event are set to include Essi Avellan MW, editor of FINE Champagne magazine, Tom Stevenson, champagne and sparkling wine expert, Richard Smart, renowned Australian viticulturist, Maurizio Zanella, president of the Franciacorta Consorzio and Olly Wehring, managing editor of just-drinks.com and Jan Konetzki, head sommelier at 3* Restaurant Gordon Ramsay

Somerset grower Oatley Vineyard is celebrating the award of English wine PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status for its Elizabeth’s 2012 wine.

Winemaker Jane Awty says: “Our yield in 2012 was, like other UK vineyards, small. We have blended our two varietals and are surprised and delighted with how good the resulting wine tastes. Only 1,800 bottles of it made so it’s a tiny, but we think rather special, vintage. We have named it Elizabeth’s 2012 after our only daughter, Liz.

“We always send our wines for independent post-bottling analysis and adjudication for quality wine status, which includes tasting by experienced and independent wine tasters. To us it’s important for any product of ours on sale to the public to be quality tested and for customers it gives some quality assurance.”

In July, Langstone Hotel, Hayling Island is hosting two English wine tasting days organised by Discover Wine as part of this year’s Hampshire Food Festival.

“The day is a fun and informative way to learn the art of wine tasting where classic English wines from local vineyards are explained and sampled with an enthusiastic tutor,” say organisers.

The day includes a three course lunch.

Join us and learn about the jargon, food and wine pairing not to mention the delights of the award winning 2 AA rosette restaurant when we shall put our knowledge to the test with wines to match our lunch.
