How to tell a good vine from a poor vine

There are still places on the WineSkills Masterclass: How to obtain good vine planting material with Helen Waite, says Plumpton college.
This Masterclass is designed to be of particular use to those planting new vines. Poor planting material will always grow into less productive vines, bearing lower quality fruit. However, it costs as much, if not more, to grow a poor vine than a good one and no-one can afford to have a vineyard that is under-performing. This Masterclass will help students to select the best planting material and plant healthy and productive vineyards.

The following topics will be covered:

• How to tell a good vine from a poor vine
• How some nurseries produce high quality plant material
• Handling, preparing and planting vines for optimal performance
• The best way to manage vines during their first year in your vineyard

The day will include practical exercises in assessing vines.

The Masterclass is being run twice as follows:

1. Plumpton College, Ditchling Rd, Nr. Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 3AE. Date: 13 June 2012. Time: 10am – 4pm
2. The Royal Agricultural College, Stroud Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 6JS. Date: 15 June 2012. Time: 10am – 4pm

The trainer is Helen Waite, who enjoys an international reputation for her research and expertise in grapevine propagation and nursery management. Previously a lecturer in Viticulture at Dookie College and Melbourne University, she is currently completing a PhD in grapevine propagation and proteomics at Charles Sturt University, Australia. Helen has already presented her work at many international conferences and industry workshops in Australia, South Africa, the US, Chile and Europe and is well known for her ability to solve problems and provide practical, cost-effective advice for nurseries and grape growers.
