Wine festival to give English and French wine equal space

An international wine festival that is set to devote as much space to UK wine as it does to French wines is to be staged in Reading next year. The Big Wine Festival, set to be held in June, 2012, is being launched this summer with an invitation-only taster event, says Olivia Ocaña, chairman, The Big Wine Festival, to be held in September 2011.

She says: “British wine producers currently have the same space allocated to it as French; that is how important we see the British wine industry.  We are utilising our taster event as a way to really showcase our plans for the whole festival.

“We will be displaying in 3D plan form but also an actual version of one of the Countries of the World of Wine structures, so that each vineyard and specialist merchants can get a real feel for what they can achieve at the festival.”

The wine festival is planned to hold from 35 to 40 9 sq m spaces; each will cost from around £300 per sq m, says Ocaña.

Not a trade fair

“This festival is the biggest international wine festival in the world, delivered purely with the customer in mind. This isn’t a trade fair, however there will be a huge number of trade press invited as well as wine buyers from all over the world in attendance.  This is a way to engage directly with the consumer in a beautiful, sophisticated, fun and relaxed environment.

“By sharing your passion and your product directly with your customers, it opens up the opportunity for that customer to come and visit you at your vineyard and socialise the incredible British wine they taste at the festival.  We will also be providing an ‘opt in’ offer where each vineyard, merchant or retailer can ‘opt in’ to have their wine on offer for mixed case delivery for customers. This is a bespoke application that we are delivering as part of our service to our retailers and our customers, so that customers can buy wine on the day and have it delivered to their home.

“The Taster Event is an invite only event, and we welcome every British wine producer to attend to ensure you have everything you need to know about retailing at The Big Wine Festival in 2012,” she says.
